The Dumerso community, like numerous communities in Ethiopia, represents a cohesive assembly of families that play a vital role in shaping the norms and values of their local culture. These community members trace their roots to the multitude of hills that define this particular region. Interestingly, the name "Dumerso community" derives from the word 'Dumersa,' which literally translates to 'hills.'

Survival in the rugged terrain of South Ethiopia has never been easy, and it continues to present challenges. To endure and thrive in this challenging environment, the Dumerso community relies on mutual support and cooperation. Every member within the community, regardless of age, gender, or economic status, holds a specific responsibility within their collective system, and this collaborative approach has proven to be effective over time.

Dumerso Station

At the Dumerso station, a well-established group of 41 community farmers collaborates with Bette Buna. Throughout the year, they engage in several programs designed to foster a strong and cohesive community. Prior to the commencement of the harvest season, they convene for a 3-day community program to negotiate agreements with the community farmers regarding living wage pricing, volume, and quality specifications. These days are also dedicated to planning additional Bette Buna investments in the local communities.

During the harvest period, this group of farmers transports their freshly harvested red cherries to the station, where Bette Buna processes distinct and fully traceable community lots. On average, coffee farmers in the Dumerso community tend to their coffee plots, which typically range from 0.5 to 1.5 hectares, yielding an average of 500kg of net green coffee. In addition to coffee cultivation, many of them cultivate various food crops to sustain their livelihoods.

Quality and Traceability

Bette Buna assigns a distinctive identification number to every lot of freshly picked cherries arriving at their station. This practice allows them to maintain full traceability, enabling them to identify the supplying farmers, distinguish between different lots, and closely monitor the journey of each coffee throughout the entire supply chain. Furthermore, Bette Buna takes the initiative to name their lots after individuals or groups who exemplify the Bette Buna mission: changing the world through coffee.

About Bette Buna

Bette Buna is a young, dedicated Dutch-Ethiopian coffee farming family, building on the legacy of the farming-grandparents Syoum and Emame. Founded and led by Dawit and Hester in 2020 and started on a 2 hectare farm in Sidamo, the couple invested the last years in terms of volume, regions, quality and sustainable scaleable impact in coffee communities. They now farm and process coffee in four different regions: Gedeo, Sidamo, Guji and Limu. Bette Buna means literally 'the house of coffee' in Amharic, and that's their purpose: being a home of (amazing) coffee, where everyone involved in it can get an equal opportunity on development.
